Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682) was an English essayist and polymath who wrote on a large variety of subjects from medicine to philosophy to religion and more. This volume collects four of his works: - The titular 'Religio Medici' ('The Religion of a Doctor') discusses Browne's own spirituality and religious opinions, with a lens of scientific imagery that was so controversial as to introduce the book to the Papal 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum', list of banned books, in 1645. - 'Hydriotaphia: Urn Funeral', a piece written upon the the discovery of 40-50 Anglo-Saxon burial urns in Norfolk about the wider context of burial rites, and on the philosophy of death. - 'A Letter to a Friend', a letter of medical case histories and thoughts on humanity. - 'On Dreams', a shorter essay on dreams covering from prophetic and insightful dreams deliberately sent by angels and devils to dreams induced by emotional state or by lifestyle, such as diet. This is a great collection of famous essays from the 17th century, world renowned and referenced by authors from Virginia Woolf to Samuel Pepys. The book itself is in good condition, whilst the dust jacket is quite worn it has protected the hardcover below, which is only affected by some edge-rubbing and bumped corners. Internally, there is a small inscription on an end-page and the pages are roughly cut, but they are all tightly bound, clean , and clear, making a good reading copy.
