The full title of this book is 'The Illustrated Family Bible Containing The Old and New Testaments with The Self-Interpreting and Explanatory Notes, and Marginal References, of the late Rev. John Brown, Minister of The Gospel at Haddington: to which is Appended, a Complete Concordance to The Old and New Testaments'. A posthumous work of Rev. John Brown (a major figure within The Church of Scotland and prolific Bible editor), this is a fascinating piece of history published in 1840. In the book's dedication to Queen Victoria, the editors express their 'anxious desire to extend, in every practicable way, the moral and religious improvement of [Her] Majesty's subjects' with this Bible. This text begins with an Introduction, which contains chapters regarding the divine authority and proper understanding of The Old and New Testaments, biblical laws, the geography and history of nations during the messianic era, and a chronological index of scripture events. Each book of the Bible features an introductory page that is beautifully illustrated, with ornate red stencilling and various black and white drawings depicting biblical scenes. The Bible ends with a Concordance, which presents a list of key words and directs the reader to which passages they can be found in within both Testaments. This truly is a stunning Bible. Sold as seen. Book will most likely have to be rebound, as front cover has come completely away from book, the back cover is partially coming away, and there is significant wear to spine. Pages are in great condition considering their age, although they are marked by some tanning and foxing. Some writing inside where someone has filled out the Family Register.
