Roma. La pittura di un impero by Stefano Tortorella, Serena Ensoli and Eugenio La Rocca Text in Italian The volume is the catalogue of the exhibition in Rome (Scuderie del Quirinale, 24 September 2009 - 17 January 2010). Through a wide selection of works coming from the main museums of the world (among others, from the excavations of Pompeii and the Archaeological Museum of Naples, from the Vatican Museums, from the Palazzo Massimo headquarters of the National Roman Museum, from the Louvre in Paris, from the British Museum in London, from the Pushkin in Moscow, from the archaeological museums of Munich, Frankfurt, Zurich), the exhibition intends to examine individual fragments of frescoes, paintings on wood or glass, trying to measure, based on the artistic techniques, the compositions, to the subjects, the formal level that painting had reached in the Roman world, from the 1st century BC. on the threshold of late antiquity and the Byzantine age. The essays in the catalogue (written by illustrious scholars with different specialist profiles) aim to achieve firmly historical objectives. What is of interest is the construction of pictorial spaces according to canons that are sometimes distant from modern ones, as can be clearly seen in the case of landscape views, in which the distance from the linear perspective system, which is now habitual for us, stands out; it is the persistence of the memory of the ancient (from the portraits of the Fayyum to the first Christian icons of Sinai); it is the study of the trends and variations that cross the Roman pictorial universe; it is the analysis of the procedures, techniques and traditions of the workshop. Ex library, but otherwise in very good condition.
