Scapegoats Of The Empire

During the Boer War in South Africa, Australian George Ramsdale Witton (1874 -1942) served as a lieutenant in the Bushveldt Carbineers until he was tried, along with two other defendants, and found guilty for the murder of Boer prisoners. The trial and outcome has intrigued many writers and was the basis for the movie 'Breaker Morant'. Was this true military justice or were the defendants scapegoats sacrificed to political expediency? This book is Witton's own straightforward account, published in 1907, of the events which led to the controversial trial and of his prison life. Few copies of this 1907 publication survived and rumours persist that the book was censored. In his well-researched afterword to this 1982 edition, Geoffrey Embleton presents some startling evidence in the form of a letter from Witton to his defence council, intended to reveal the whole truth at a time (1970) when it could no longer hurt the descendants of those involved. Condition of the pages is good but the edges are stained. There is slight wear to the hardback cover and the first page is torn.
