Shakespeare's Comedy Of Twelfth Night Or What You Will With Illustrations By W. Heath Robinson
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
143 p., interspersed with plates. 26 cm. 40 tipped-in colour plates, all of which are present but coming away from the brown pages (paste down is loose). Green cloth hardcover with gold impressing. Some rubbing to boards, front spine cover is detached slightly and corners of the book are bent due to shelf wear. Binding is intact but fragile. Rough cut end pages which show age. Slight spotting starting at edges of pages. Book is undated; but smaller former owner inscription from 1919 incidating at least early 1900s. William Heath Robinson, cartoonist and illustrator, is today remembered for drawings of ridiculously complicated machines. But Robinson's early career involved book illustration and he can be counted among the best of the Golden Age book illustrators. In Twelfth Night, his first large "gift book" assignment, his sense of humour is less obvious, but his love of romantic landscapes is very much evident. The 24-page description of the play is by famed literary critic Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.
