Susan King. Silver End: Voices from the Guv'nor's Village. Silver End Branch of the WEA, 1996. Pb. in fine condition. Signed by the author with 'Best Wishes' on front end paper. 5 ph. in b & w . Front cover has sketch by Munnings of Crittall. 116pp A history of Silver End, a model village near Braintree, Essex and conceived after WW1 by Francis Henry Crittall who established a factory there to manufacture components for metal windows. He provided his workforce with houses and amenities, and in 1928 built a large department store and the largest village hall in England. The store was burnt down in 1951 and since this book was written production has ceased at the factory and the buildings pulled down. So sadly Susan King has written here a memorial to a vanished age and indeed her history does concentrate on the origins and early development of Silver End and ends in 1939. Sourced by interviews with those who can recall this era This copy PS9.99
