Goodreads says: A dark, nihilist novel full of surprises and a vicious, cold wit. It appears to be the third book in a (possibly) failed series by the author. Casson, our hero, is a wine merchant who works with the police (Strutt). There's mention of two other cases where they worked together. Presumably those cases are in the two other books (which I assume are The Hammersmith Maggot, and Goodbye Is Not Worthwhile). The plot is impressive, in the sense that it keeps chugging along, and each new step comes as a surprise. The dark tone is beautiful. A mother jokes, after her daughter is murdered, that perhaps Casson should have taken the girl as his mistress, to help her be better developed. She comes across as psychotic, but Casson assures us that under her cold demeanor is a great deal of feeling. "The book toys with this idea, and most of the characters are cold, detached, intellectual. What we think, what we feel, what matters. It's very British, in a kind of stiff upper lip, crisp dialogue, feelings buried sort of way. But perhaps taken to extreme. Hardback with dust jacket, unclipped. Shelf wear with foxing and discolouration around body edges reflecting age and use. Otherwise a perfectly readable copy with a tight binding.
