Sotheby's: Contemporary Art Evening Auction: London: 12 February 2013 Property from a Private Swedish Collection This extraordinary collection, built by a private Swedish individual from the 1960s onwards, truly epitomises the place and decades in which it was created: a cultivated response to the sheer variety of not only European, but also American Modernism, that was embraced by the city of Stockholm during the middle of the last century. French Modernism dominated the cultural agenda in Sweden during the 1950s, a tendency that is elegantly reflected in this collection with the inclusion of sculptural examples by Jean Arp, Henri Laurens and Pierre Bonnard as well as works on canvas by Albert Gleizes, Jacques Villon and Auguste Herbin. Major artist born outside France who later followed the temptation to study and work in Paris during their creative careers are also included: Max Ernst's extraordinary Jeune Homme au Coeur Battant features alongside Marc Chagall's glorious La Famille, whilst Pablo Picasso's superb work on paper, Femme Debout, complements Alberto Giacometti's Torso of a Woman and the witty furniture examples.
