Still Digging: Interleaves from an Antiquary's Notebook - Sir Mortimer Wheeler. Published by Michael Joseph, Hardback with dust jacket, 1955. Signed first edition. Illustrated. Sir Robert Eric Mortimer Wheeler (1890 - 1976) was an archaeologist, museum director and author; this is his autobiography. He was recognised as one of the most important British archaeologists of the 20th century, responsible for successfully encouraging British public interest in the discipline and advancing methodologies of excavation and recording, and popularising archaeology on TV. In the mid-1950s, Wheeler was an early speaker on archaeology on R.K. Swan's Hellenic's Hellenic cruise line. He was subsequently made a director, and he continued to make regular cruises as guest speaker. Although Wheeler was a pioneer in many ways, many of his specific interpretations of archaeological sites were subsequently discredited or reinterpreted, and his private life was shrouded in controversy. Condition: Good. The pages are tanned and a little foxed around the edges, and dust along the top page edges. The dust jacket is showing wear and tear, plus fading on the spine. Signed on the front free end paper.
