In STRIPER: A Story of Fish and Man, noted author-conservationist John N. Cole presents both a moving personal story of his days as a commercial fisherman and a detailed natural history of the striped bass whose strength and grace have challenged and inspired American fishermen for centuries. Yet, this most prized of food and game fish-a fish so perfectly prepared by thousands of millennia of evolution for life in coastal waters that its intelligence seems almost human-is dying out, and may soon be extinct. Cole traces the striper's incredible "saga of survival" from its precarious inception in rivers and estuaries to its coastal migrations from Canada to Florida in waters now thick with haul seiners, surf casters, and toxic chemical pollutants. In alternating chapters, he recalls his experiences as a Long Island seine fisherman, when he learned not only to respect and admire the striped bass, but also to live in harmony with nature and another one of her creatures, his fellow man. In Striper, Cole invites us to take the sea's measure, to discover with him the fisherman's arduous, infinitely satisfying way of life and the magnificent fish which symbolizes that life, and to act now as "this most determined survivor" is finally faced with insurmountable odds. Striper was a selection of the Dolphin Book Club; was excerpted in the Reader's Digest and Country Journal; and won for John Cole the Outdoor Life Magazine Conservationist of the Year Award in 1979. Striper: A Story of Fish and Man by John N. Cole. Illustrated by Marvin Kuhn. Published by Little, Brown & Co. 1978. 269pp. Paperback. Book condition: Fair - heavily creased spine with lean, crease to corner of front cover, a little marking to page edges. Former owner inscription to first page. Internally clean but a well-used copy.
