This is the second children's adventure novel in the 'Swallows and Amazons' series. The book features Walker siblings (The Swallows) and Blackett sisters (The Amazons), camping in the hills and moorland country around a lake, with Maria Turner, the Blacketts' Great Aunt, acting as an antagonist. Arthur Michell Ransome CBE (1884-1967) was an English author and journalist, best known for the "Swallows and Amazons" series of children's books about the school-holiday adventures of children, mostly in the Lake District and the Norfolk Broads. The entire series remains in print, and forms the basis for a tourist industry around Windermere and Coniston Water, the two lakes Ransome adapted as his fictional North Country lake. He also wrote about the literary life of London, and about Russia before, during, and after the revolutions of 1917. His connection with the leaders of the Revolution led to him providing information to the Secret Intelligence Service, while he was also suspected by MI5 of being a Soviet spy. Our book is in remarkably good general condition for its age, having been protected by its dust jacket (unclipped). This, however, has suffered a fair amount of wear and loss, particularly at corners and top & tail of the spine, and is generally grubby and discoloured. The book itself, however, bound in green cloth with gilt title etc on front & spine, is only lightly worn, with minimal bumping of corners and a couple of pale marks on the spine. A small white label is pasted under the title on the spine, with what may be a personal catalogue number. Inside, the binding is firm with no loose pages; all pages clean and bright; no sign of foxing seen. One 1cm tear at the foot of p.419. Ex libris of previous owner pasted to ?halftitle page.
