Sweet Cork Of Thee

This is an enjoyable book describing the journey through County Cork and County Kerry taken in 1949 by the Cork-born artist and travel writer Robert Gibbings. It is illustrated throughout by the author's own woodcuts, for which he was rightly famous. The journey begins with the author being met by a friend at the quay at Cork and then being driven fifty miles west to Gougane Barra. There he meets other old friends and is entertained by tall stories. Later, he is back in Cork City, where he buys a van and drives off to explore Cork and Kerry on his own. All the time he is meeting people, giving people rides, making drawings, describing the towns and closely observing nature. THE BOOK has thirty short chapters. The author's black and white illustrations are sometimes full page, but often small and embedded within the text, but all are detailed and reward close inspection.
