Clare Leighton. Tempestuous Petticoat. The Story of an Invincible Edwardian. Victor Gollancz, 1948. Dj. falling apart, boards lightly marked and pages slightly tanned, but clean throughout and binding intact. End papers with coloured drawing of an Edwardian scene, but only title page is ill. 253pp. Clara Leighton's evocative portrait of her mother who helped support her family by writing serials for the Northcliffe Press, but whose main interest was as an Edwardian character, a beautiful, grand, charming yet mysterious woman. Written at a time when many pined for the glamour of that era. Strangely enough it seems that glow has not receded and the public still clamour for stories of this Golden Age. The difference being that in 1947 there were many still around, like this writer, who could give first hand accounts of their lives at the turn of the century. Clare Leighton (1898 - 1989) was a well known illustrator and writer who was, by the time she wrote this, living in America. This copy PS29.99
