The Art of Wrought Ironwork in Hungary by Karoly Perehazy Walking among the monuments of the old historical town cores, one is repeatedly confronted with exquisite examples of wrought ironwork. The gates of the former County Hall of Eger, the work of the architect Henrik Fazola, or the trellis-work tripartite gate of the former Esterhazy Palace at Fertod, are just two of the most famous examples of artistic wrought ironwork in Hungary. Because they usually fit harmoniously into their architectural surroundings, most objects of ornamental ironwork are not widely known outside the small circle of experts. The overwhelming majority of the objects of ancient ironwork were architectural in character: gates, screens, mountings, locks, padlocks, chandeliers, chests, candelabra or small candlesticks, to mention but a few. Their use in churches, palaces, castles and residential buildings dates back to medieval times. Karoly Perehazy is a distinguished scholar of the history of Hungarian wrought ironwork. In recent years, he has written several studies and a book on the subject. In this book, Perehazy describes the significant works of Hungarian ornamental ironwork from the Middle Ages up to the middle of the 20th century. The majority of these works may still be seen in their original place; some, however, are now housed in museum collections. In addition to describing each object individually, the author also provides an outline of the history of the craft and the technology of ornamental wrought ironwork. His list of master craftsmen, which contains the most important biographical data, is the first of its kind in the Hungarian literature of the field. In sum, the book is not only an important work on a special branch of the decorative arts, but is also highly interesting to general cultural history. See photos for condition
