Title: The Artists of Hill End Author: Gavin Wilson Extract from the Foreword: Had Donald Friend and his old friend Donald Murray, elected to move to Tasmania in 1947 as they originally intended, the course of post war Australian art might have been quite different. They were seeking a suitable environment for contemplation and mature expression. Not surprisingly they thought Tasmania offered the opportunity for a complete escape from the treacherous pools of hedonism and temptations of urban Sydney, to which they had only returned from the far north. Thankfully Friend discovered Hill End instead. He and Russell Drysdale read about the old gold mining towns of western New South Wales and embarked on what was to become a vital and indelible part of the history of Australian landscape painting. The book has an illustrated cover with white and black lettering to the spine. All four upper and lower outer corners on the front and rear cover have bumping and wear and tear. The top and tail of the spine have bumping and wear and tear. There is light fading to the spine. There are stains and mild foxing to the front title page and last page.
