SIDNEY WOODWARD-SMITH was born in the "Nightingale Lying-in Home", in the County of Derby, in the heart of England, on the 23rd November 1904. Later the family moved to Dorset. There he entered a private grammar school in 1918, at a very formative stage in the life of a more than ordinarily intellectual young boy. With his family, Sidney migrated to Australia in 1920, at the age of 16, and settled in Sydney, which was to remain his home-town until his death in 1973. He was a pupil at the famous Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney. He also studied at the East Sydney Technical College, where he completed the full course in Commercial Art. In 1935 Woodward-Smith was appointed to the New Medical School at the University of Sydney, to inaugurate the Dept. of Medical Illustration. He devoted himself to landscape painting at every opportunity. From about 1928 Woodward-Smith's paintings appeared in many important Sydney Exhibitions, where his work drew favourable notices from many of the leading Art critics. The Sydney Morning Herald Art critic at that time wrote: "Mr. Woodward-Smith (who is only 23 years old, and exhibited for the first time with the Australian Art Society last year), excels in clear-cut views of hills and sky, glowing with colour of the utmost depth and purity. His colour sense is very keen." Dr. William Cammack has dealt with this Artist's interesting life and work in a highly definitive manner. This record Woodward-Smith's paintings and Wings is a fitting tribute to this well-kno Sydney Artist. SOLD AS SEEN
