Daniels, who had stopped by the Wright brothers' camp at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, to lend a hand that morning, snapped the shutter at precisely 10:35. catching Wilbur Wright in mid-stride as his brother Orville rose into the air. The machine floundered forward for another twelve seconds and struck the sand 120 feet from the point of takeoff. For the first time in history an airplane had taken off, moved forward under its own power, and landed at a point at least as high as that from which it started - all under the complete control of the pilot. On this isolated, windswept Atlantic beach, a man had flown.
