The Book of Psalms, According to the Authorized Version. With concise notes and the scripture references of Bagster's English Version of the polyglot Bible. Small book, 105 x 77 x 8mm. Very dark (almost black) maroon leather, embossed to all faces with floral and chequerboard decoration. Quite intricate and well defined. The upper bears the printer's name: Dobson, London in very small print. Otherwise the only word appearing on the covers is "Psalms" in a neat spine panel. Corners and hingelines are a little frayed; bindings are excellent, as one would expect of Dobson. All edges gilt. pp 132. Title was printed for Samuel Bagster Jnr (early nineteenth century). Seller's plate of J Clifford of Tunbridge Wells. Faint 2H pencil words: "George" (to front paste down) and a scratchy illegible surname to the rear, upside down: an interesting idea, poorly executed. All pages tanned and clear. Publisher's advertisement: ... price one shilling. On the final page the publisher shows off his talent by using both vertical and horizontal text, and treats us to the only illustration in the book: an old man facing up to the elements, with the caption "I have waited for THY salvation, O LORD". Overall a interesting example of publishing from the period. The boards are a little bowed.
