The Cambridge Ancient History is a multi-volume work of ancient history from Prehistory to Late Antiquity, published by Cambridge University Press. The first series, consisting of 12 volumes, was planned in 1919 by Irish historian J. B. Bury and published between 1924 and 1939, co-edited by Frank Adcock and Stanley Arthur Cook. The volumes are: 1. Egypt and Babylonia to 1580 B.C. (1923). 2. The Egyptian and Hittite Empires to c. 1000 B.C. (1924). 3. The Assyrian Empire. (1929). 4. The Persian Empire and the West. (1930). 5. Athens. 478-401 B.C. (1927). 6 Macedon. 401-301 B.C. (1927). 7. The Hellenistic Monarchies and the Rise of Rome. (1964). 8. Rome and the Mediterranean. 218-133 B.C. (1930). 9. The Roman Republic. 133-44 B.C. (1932). 10. The Augustan Empire. 44 B.C.-A.C. 70. (1934). 11. The Imperial Peace. A.D. 70-192. (1936). 12. The Imperial Crisis and Recovery. A.D. 193-324. (1939). **There are an additional 4 volumes (of 5) of plates published in 1927, 1928, 1934 and 1939. Please be aware that volume 3 is NOT included** Brown cloth boards with gilt illustration to front and lettering to spine. The boards are faded. Deckled edges with gilt page tops. Many black and white fold-out maps and tables. Four volumes of plates illustrated in black and white. The set contains mainly first editions, with a few second editions. Generally the set is in good to fair condition, with some marking, bumping and creasing to spine edges. All volumes contain the previous owners bookplate and some inscriptions to front endpapers.
