The Castles On The Ground - The Anatomy Of Suburbia - J.m.richards

Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Condition is used but very good. Dust jacket, covers, spine and pages are unmarked and intact. The Castles on the Ground is an acute analysis and an affectionate description of the English suburb, its inhabitants and its characteristic architecture. It is also about popular taste as exemplified in the suburbs - what ordinary people really like ad the reason why they like it, as distinct from what more sophisticated people think they ought to like. When the book was first published in 1946 the ideas in it were far ahead of their time. Instead of pouring scorn on suburban taste, J.M.Richards took it, the needs it fulfilled and the impulses that created it, seriously - and all this at a time when the architectural critics were almost wholly concerned with the principles and aesthetic purism of the new architecture. As editor of The Architectural Review, he was, and still is, one of modern architecture's best known exponents, and this excursion into unorthodox byways brought him much disapproval from his architectural contemporaries, especially for his suspicion of scientific solutions and his acceptance of accidental values.
