'Comprising The Antiquities of the Jews, A History of the Jewish Wars, Three Dissertations Concerning Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, &c. &c. and The Life of Josephus, Written by Himself. Translated by William Whiston, Professor of Mathematics in the University of Cambridge. With a Sequel to The History of the Jews; Continued to the Present Time.' Undated edition, published by The London Printing and Publishing Company Limited, with an inscription dated 1867. Has a large amount of etching plates illustrating various scenes at the back. Fun facts about William Whiston: he was a protege of Newton who lost his position at another university for being anti-Hell and anti-Trinity, and supposedly at least based his translation on a version of Josephus that had a lot of transcription errors. Interesting guy! Condition: Boards are extremely worn, corners almost entirely bumped card, spine missing large chunk of head and flaking/cracking, leather peeling in large flap from front, in general very marked, scratched, and rubbed. Internally, hinges of boards almost detaching from bookblock at front and back. Relatively minor to moderate foxing and marks throughout, worst at back, all pages entirely readable; the plates at the back have childish scribbles on the backs of many towards the end, but the actual images have not been drawn on, although they have marks and staining.
