"The Conquest of Space" A portfolio of paintings by Chesley Bonestell, the pioneering creator of science fiction art and illustration, with accompanying text by rocket science writer Willy Ley. Published 1952 by Sidgwick and Jackson Ltd; Readers Union edition produced for sale to its members only. Introduction (1949) by the author and four Chapters over 160 pages; lists (of Contents, Figures and Paintings) and details on the Planets and Satellites of the Solar System at front; 48 colour and black and white plates grouped in four sections with 18 diagrams by the author throughout the text. Dark purple cloth boards with illustration in gilt to front; details of title in gilt and RU logo in silver to decorated spine. Shelf wear to all board edges with corners bumped; top and tail of spine split and crushed; slight sideways lean to boards but tightly bound with plates and text clean and unmarked.
