Two volumes bound in red cloth, with gilt title. Bindings slightly rubbed at edges, corners slightly bumped. Binding tight, block clean. Patterned endpapers; name of owner on front flyleaf. Red dustjackets with knot motif printed on front and spine; list of other authors in Everyman library on back. Dustjackets have tears up to 1cm at spine and corners. Numbers 393 and 394 in the Everyman library; original edition 1909, tenth reprint 1938. The dustjacket with knot motif was designed by Eric Ravilious in 1938. A story that combines romance, mystery, and derring-do in the setting of the turbulent period of Napoleon's return to power and final defeat. This classic tale, in an anonymous translation, was one of Everyman's best-sellers, reprinted ten times in thirty years. This edition was the version by which the story became known and loved by British readers.
