In this book, the author discusses the new science of 'criminal anthropology', which had existed for some 15 years by this time. He deals briefly with the problems of the criminal both within himself, and in his contact with society. Claiming no original thought himself, Ellis thanks a long list of names medical officers of prisons for their invaluable help, as well as thanking innumerable others. Henry Havelock Ellis (1859-1939) was an English-French physician, eugenicist, writer, progressive intellectual and social reformer who studied human sexuality. He co-wrote the first medical textbook in English on homosexuality in 1897, and also published works on a variety of sexual practices and inclinations, as well as on transgender psychology. He developed the notions of narcissism and autoeroticism, later adopted by psychoanalysis. His 'Contemporary Science' Series ran to 29 volumes, 2 of which he wrote himself. Our book is in good general condition for its age, bound in the C.S. Series standard maroon cloth with title etc in gilt on front and spine, with an impressed band and motif in the centre of the front cover. The covers are a little ageworn generally, with lightly bumped corners, some rubbing of edges & angles, and shelfwear to top & tail of the spine. Inside, the binding is generally firm with occasional points of weakness between gatherings, pages are all clean, though slightly browned, and bookseller's labels are pasted to both pastedowns.
