"Holger Pedersen (1867-1953) was a Danish linguist of the neogrammarian school, whose wide-ranging scholarly interests took him deep into the history and development of the vast array of languages that make up the Indo-European languages. His extensive publications included detailed studies of Hittite, Sanskrit, and extensive studies on Old Germanic, including Old English. He was a major figure in the study of languages from a historical perspective. "The Discovery of Language" was published in Danish in 1924 and quickly published in an English translation by Harvard University Press. That edition was republished in 1959 by Indiana University Press. The book contains the following chapters: 1. Introduction 2. The Ancient Literary Languages of India and Iran Become Known 3. The Great Linguistic Groups of Modern Europe: Germanic, Slavonic, Celtic 4. Lithuanian, Albanian, Armenian 5. The Continued Study of the Classical Languages 6. The Study of Non-Indo-European Families of Languages 7. Inscriptions and Archeological Discoveries. The Study of the History of Writing 8. The Methods of Comparative Linguistics. Probably the best overview of nineteenth-century linguistic scholarship: a fundamental position on the intellectual history of the nineteenth century. It is essential to the scholar, but perfectly accessible to the educated and curious layman" (from a review on amazon). Generally good condition. No highlighting or other notes. Considerable shelfwear - a well-used book.
