The Dublin Diary of Stanislaus Joyce by George Harris Healey ed. Stanislaus Joyce, brother of James, and the author of that striking but unfortunately incomplete autobiography My Brother's Keeper, kept a diary during his youth and early manhood and the material here reprinted carries his story on for about a year and a half after the end of the earlier book. It has been carefully edited by Professor George H. Healey of Cornell University, who introduces it as follows: Maurice Daedalus, the brother in James Joyce's Stephen Hero, keeps a diary. Mr Duffy, the principal character of 'A Painful Case, in Dubliners, likewise keeps 'a little sheaf of papers held together with a brass pin', in which 'a sentence was inscribed from time to time'. Both Maurice Daedalus and Mr Duffy are derived from the author's younger brother Stanislaus, and Stanislaus actually kept a diary, in which the sentences he inscribed from time to time often had to do with his brother. That sheaf of papers, still held together by the brass pin, is now preserved in the Cornell University Library with the other early papers of the Joyce family. As Mr T. S. Eliot said in his introduction to My Brother's Keeper, James Joyce's work is so autobiographical that 'further study of the man and his background seems not only suggested by our own inquisitiveness, but almost expected of us by the author himself.' This Dublin Diary sheds a fresh light on the formative years 1903-1905. Book is in fair condition. Ex library book - stamp and brown paper sticking on inside cover.
