The Earliest Ships: The Evolution Of Boats Into Ships [conway's History Of The Ship]
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Researching back into prehistory and into the evidence provided by archaeology, this volume explores the varied lines of development from the most primitive watercraft to the first real seagoing ships, from Northern Europe, through the Mediterranean to the Near East and Far East. It traces the most basic boats - rafts, skin boats and dugouts, for example - which developed ultimately into ships for trade, commerce and war, from simple forms to the more complex plank boats of the Bronze Age like the Dover Boat of some 60 feet in length. The later Celtic and Viking ships are covered, and non-European traditions in Arabia and China up to the 16th century are also described. Apart from chapters on the craft themselves there are sections on related topics, including early pilotage and seamanship together with an evaluation of what modern reconstructions can tell us about the performance of ancient ship types. "The Earliest Ships" is a comprehensive introduction to the ships at the dawn of seafaring. 1st volume in the 'Conway's History of the Ship' series. Each volume is written by experts on the period considered and is extensively illustrated. Hardcover. Used, very good. Dust-jacket is in very good condition and the pages inside are unmarked and clean. Hundreds of black-and-white illustrations.
