This is, as stated in the Foreword, a rather unusual book, since a valet would not usually be so bold as to put down in print his memories of service to an important personage. But there were good reasons for this valet to do so, and the result is a fascinating portrait of an Emperor of Austria, whose reign encompassed a number of wars with Italy, Prussia, and many of the Balkan nations. Eugen Ketterl (1859-1928) was the last valet of Emperor Franz Joseph I. He held this position for 22 years, until the death of the monarch in 1916. Ketterl began his work at the Viennese court as a waiter at the court table. In 1894 he was appointed to the imperial chamber and offered the position of personal valet to the emperor, which he immediately accepted. In the years that followed, Ketterl became an indispensable collaborator of Franz Joseph, not only taking care of the emperor's personal hygiene and wardrobe, but also showing him newspaper articles that were otherwise kept away from the monarch. After the death of his master and the collapse of the monarchy, Ketterl wrote his memoirs, which were published posthumously in 1929. Our book is a fairly rare edition from a publisher still in existence, but always rather 'niche'. Although undated, it is believed to have been issued in 1929, and a pasted label on the front tells us it was one of the volumes in Boots' Booklovers Library. The dark green cloth covers are ageworn consistent with its almost 100-year history, but surprisingly little damaged - just some minor bumping of corners and a little shelfwear to top & tail of the spine. Gilt title etc on the spine is somewhat faded. Inside, the front pastedown bears the label of a previous owner, dated 15.ix.82, and another previous owner's name is inscribed at the top of the front fep. The rear pastedown has an ink-written price of PS0.90, and 'The Dartmoor Bookshop, Ashburton', with a black date stamp at the foot of 20 Aug ... (indecipherable). There is also a long streak of perhaps the remnant of a pasted label. The binding is generally firm, with one weakness at the final gathering, and a loose illustration at p.288; pages are generally clean and bright; only the faintest indication of possible foxing.
