The essays of Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) were first published in French from 1580, with the first English edition appearing in 1603. This is a later edition of that first translation by John or Giovanni Florio (1552-1625). Published by J M Dent & Sons Ltd, London. These particular volumes are a mix of second and third editions thus, published between 1899 and 1905. Full set of six small volumes in green leather (sunned at the spine) with gilt titles and decoration on spine and front. Volume 1 has some losses at the spine and cracks in the leather and card at the front hinge. Some volumes have marks or scratches to the leather on covers. Gilt page tops. Ribbon markers. All in good condition, clean internally, free of notes and inscriptions.
