The Expansion of Elizabethan England IS THE BLUE VOLUME IN THE IMAGES SHOWN Elizabethan society is arguably the most successful in English history. The adventurers and merchants (as well as the poets and playwrights) of that age are legendary. The subject of this classic study by A.L. Rowse is that society's 'expansion'. Elizabethan society expanded both physically (first into Cornwall, then Ireland, then across the oceans to first contact with Russian, the Canadian North and then the opening up of trade with India and the Far East) and in terms of ideas and influence on international affairs. Rowse argues that in the Elizabethan age we see the beginning of England's huge impact upon the world. Sold individually! Part of a set of four volumes by A. L. Rowse Folio Society but no slipcase. For readers who are interested in English history or Elizabethan England specifically, this is one of the first books i would recommend. The Tudor Dynasty covers Henry Tudor's (later known as King Henry Vll) defeat of King Richard lll at Bosworth Field in 1485 thru to the death of Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1603. QEI's reign - aka The English Renaissance, The Golden Age, The Shakespearian Era - are all creatures of her reign. QE1's cooperation with an elected Parliament for laws gave a true voice to the people, (relative) freedom of religion, trial by jury, colonization primarily in what is now known as America (America's Constitution in 1776 was based on England's Magna Carta in the 1200's, which was, in turn, the basis of the French Constitution after the French Revolution in the late 1700's). When you read this book you will understand why England changed the world in only 118 years. Of course, the root of any great country or movement, starts with it's people, but she was their shining star. The author, a renowned authority on historic England, is a most elegant writer. This book sparkles with knowledge, compassion, insight, and humor. The author is still with us in his wonderful books and it is an experience to read and reread them. I highly recommend this book.
