The Farmer's Year, A Calendar Of English Husbandry, Written And Engraved By Clare Leighton First Edn
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Exterior is fair condition: no dust jacket, green cloth binding much faded on front, back and spine. Spine torn across at top, chipped at foot. Gilt title and vignette on front still visible. Corners bumped and worn, 1cm tears. Edges of block slightly spotted. Interior is in good condition: binding tight, all plates present and clean. Slight spotting on some pages. Green printed endpapers still fresh. This is the first edition of Leighton's most enduring work, an account of British farming life based on interviews and personal observation of farm workers. Each month has a text with decorated initial and vignette, and a large format plate. These are printed from wood engravings, a technique in which Leighton excelled and for which she wrote handbooks. Trained at the Slade, Leighton had a successful career as an artist, illustrator, lecturer and product designer in Britain and the USA; this book was published in an American edition in 1934. Her work balances the influences of international contemporaries such as Raoul Dufy or the Mexican and Russian realists with the British naturalist tradition of Bewick and Palmer.
