This first English edition is based on the Russian edition prepared by the Institute of Marxism-Leninism in 1959. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a major uprising in India in 1857-58 against the rule of the British East India Company, which functioned as a sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown. The rebellion was fed by resentments born of diverse perceptions, including invasive British-style social reforms, harsh land taxes, summary treatment of some rich landowners and princes, as well as scepticism about the improvements brought about by British rule. Many Indians rose against the British; however, many also fought for the British, and the majority remained seemingly compliant to British rule. This book contains articles written by Marx and Engels for the New York Daily Tribune, as well as articles written by Marx in 1853 on the situation in India on the eve of the revolt. extracts from his Notes on Indian History and from letters containing important passages by the founders of Marxism on the insurrection. Hardback with dustjacket. Wear to jacket edges and fading to spine. Red boards have spine title and authors' names on front cover in gilt. Front and rear fep tanned in contact with jacket flap. Some pages have all edges tanned. Text is clean and unmarked. A nice copy of a rare title.
