The Folktale - Stith Thompson. Published by the Dryden Press, Hardback (no dust jacket) 1951. Second Printing. This book discusses the folktale, oral and written. It is a is a very wide subject, with a huge mass of materials, and vital in relation to other areas of study, such as anthropology, psychology and art, to name but a few. The author claimed that, at the time of writing/publication, there was no other work which could serve as a comprehensive guide, until the appearance of his work. It is divided into four parts: part one discusses the nature and forms of the folktale, part two, the folktale from Ireland to India, part three the folktale in a "primitive culture: North American Indian", and part four, studying the folktale. This is a comprehensive work on the folktale or fairy tale, but one must bear in mind that some of the terminology used, and attitudes to, for instance, other nations are those of more then seventy years ago, not necessarily those of today. Condition: Good. Inside, the text is free of extraneous marks, only tanning, which is most prevalent around the page edges. The pages are otherwise clean. On the dark red-coloured boards, fading can be seen, especially the spine, and a small number of other marks. A name and date are written on the front free end paper in pencil.
