The first of a series which covers all of Scotland, this volume is intended to be as comprehensive a compendium as possible of the fortified houses of Berwickshire, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Peelbesshire, Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, and West Lothian. The aspect, situation, special features, and history of each house are described briefly and in plain terms. A pen and ink sketch of each by the author accompanies the description. The list of houses has been confined to those which still retain, in essence, their original architectural features, despite alterations and additions. The book deals with houses which are or have been private residences- fortalices, lesser castles, peel-towers, keeps, and defensible lairds' houses- and not with great castles, fortresses, and palaces. In this class of building Scotland is richer than any other country in the world, although our heritage in this as in other fields stands today in danger of destruction through demolition or neglect. Nigel Tranter's book will perhaps serve to remind us of how much it is to be valued. Book and dust jacket in very good condition. Both have mild foxing and the dust jacket is a bit worn out.
