This novel, originally published in 1897, is set in 1840s Italy, a time of violence and uprisings against Austria, at the time dominant in the country. The story centres on the life of Arthur Burton, a member of the Youth movement, and his antagonist, Padre Montanelli. A thread of a tragic relationship between Arthur and his love, Gemma, simultaneously runs through the story. It is a story of faith, disillusionment, revolution, romance, and heroism. Ethel Lilian Voynich (1864-1960) was an Irish novelist and musician, and a supporter of several revolutionary causes. Born in Cork, but raised in England, she was a significant figure, not only on the late Victorian literary scene, but also in Russian emigre circles. She is best known for "The Gadfly", which was hugely popular in her lifetime, especially in Russia. Our book is a first edition copy of the Heinemann Story Library edition, published in 1938. The unclipped dust jacket (by C.W.B. - not identified), is in surprisingly good condition for its age, with only minor chips at edges & corners, and general age-darkening and dulling of the spine. The flaps are lightly foxed. The book itself, bound in bright turquoise cloth, with title etc in dark red-brown lettering on the spine, and publisher's emblem on the back, shows remarkably few external signs of wear, and there is just one small dark mark near the bottom of the front cover. Inside, the binding is firm with no loose pages; all pages slightly tanned, but clean and clear; previous owner's name in ink on front fep dated May 1941. This appears to be a scarce 1st edition copy of this issue.
