Joseph Gelineau, in 1953. Its immediate purpose was to provide music for the French version of the psalms in the recently published Bible de Jerusalem This version aimed to express as accurately as possible the meaning of the Hebrew psalms and, at the same time, to reproduce their verse-structure and the rhythmic character of each line. It was this last feature which was the most distinctive element of the new translation.
