Anyone who has visited an art gallery will understand the value of being able to look at paintings close up and, to see the way the colours have been used and how the paint has been handled. Now you can have your own personal art gallery in this series of books, 'The history and techniques of the great masters'. Each book brings you a selection of ten or more famous paintings, magnificently reproduced in full colour, and with actual size details so that you can see the way the artist has worked - just as though the paintings were hanging on your own walls. The text analyses each painting in turn, and the captions tell you exactly which techniques the artist has used to obtain particular effects. Wherever possible, the author provides full information about the types of paint brushes, canvas and priming favoured by the artist, and how the colours were mixed and applied. James McNeill Whistler was one of the major eccentrics of his time. His dandyism, his brilliant wit, his exquisite taste and his quarrelsome nature made him a legend in his own time, and even today many people who know little about his paintings are familiar with the story of his lawsuit with John Ruskin, who had accused him of "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face". But although he was an original and innovatory artist, his paintings are far less well known than those of his Impressionist contemporaries. This is partly because his flamboyant character has tended to obscure his artistic achievements and partly because his extreme perfectionism severely limited his output - he would scrape down and sometimes abandon any work that did not satisfy him completely.
