Merchant's Category: Media> Books
This edition is a facsimile reprint of the 1839 original. The author of this much sought after early topographical study, first published in Ashbourne in 1839 is unknown. But whoever he was, he was an enthusiastic and keen observer, who produced a book noteworthy for its fine writing and accurate detail. The area covered centres on Ashbourne in Derbyshire, with sections on the history of the town and on the famous Shrovetide football match, and extends northwards into the Peak, covering Dovedale and the Man8ifold Valley, Hartington, the well-dressing ceremonies at Tissington and including a lively account of a trip down the great copper mine at Acton. The area south of Ashbourne is also covered as far as Tutbury and its castle. A noteworthy feature of the book is the collection of twenty-two lithographic plates mostly of halls and mansions. Condition: Very Good. Inside pages clean and unmarked. Owner's name and date on facing front endpaper. Jacket has some creasing at edges.
