"Building - whether for shelter, defence, or ornament - is inseparable from government, and in England public works have a long history extending over a thousand years. 'The History of the King's Works' is the first attempt to tell the story of royal building in England from Offa's Dyke to the establishment of what is now known as the Ministry of Public Building and Works." - From cover overleaf. This first two-volume set covers the Middle Ages, beginning with the Norman Conquest to just prior the Tudor era, in comprehensive detail featuring many photographs of architecture and plans for some of the buildings. Included large scale architectural plans in the separate box are: Dover Castle, the Tower of London, the Medieval Palace of Westminster, and Windsor Castle. The books themselves are in good condition, though the dust-jackets are slightly soiled and there are names of previous owners inscribed on an endpage. The binding is still tight and the pages are all clean and clear. The maps are in great condition too, with the only wear being some damage to the corners where they have been attached to a wall.
