"The History of the Reformation in Scotland" was written by the Scottish reformer, John Knox, between 1559 and 1566, though the fifth book is more usually thought to have been written by David Buchanan, Knox's biographer. A short pamphlet, commissioned by the Lords of the Congregation (leaders of the Scottish Protestant nobility), forms the second volume, and Knox enlarged the work to encompass the years from 1528, when Patrick Hamilton was martyred. Republished since, in many forms, edited by various scholars, the work is still important as a religious historical text. John Knox (c. 1514-1572) was a Scottish minister, Reformed theologian, and writer who was a leader of the country's Reformation. He was the founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Charles John Guthrie, Lord Guthrie FRSE FRSGS LLD (1849-1920) was a Scottish judge and lawyer. Our book is in good general condition for its age, its dark olive-green cloth covers a little ageworn, with rubbing of edges, angles and corners, and some shelfwear to top & tail of the spine. Gilt title etc on front and spine remains quite bright and clean. Page tops gilt, and other edges roughcut. Inside, black endpapers are intact, binding firm with no loose pages; pages fairly foxed, but some clean & bright; a few pencilled annotations; various other pencil notes on rear fep, obverse of front fep, and ensuing blank page. The 56 illustrations are scattered through the text, and the index and glossary are both present.
