'The I Ching Handbook: Decision-Making With and Without Divination' by Mondo Secter. North Atlantic Books, 2002. Paperback, 186 pp. Condition: Good. A few marks and scuffs to the covers and an old price sticker on the back. Clean throughout and tightly bound with no former owner inscriptions. Mondo Sector bafflingly describes himself as "a label-free multi-disciplinary philosopher-scholar-sculptor-cosmologist". But, putting that on one side, what's clear about this little manual is that it's accessible to both 'beginners and advanced users' of the ancient Chinese classic. For example, Hexagram 16 ('yu') is explained by Mr Secter thus: "Your charisma spontaneously stirs others to pursue inner work or follow a calm and just manager or director in a new venture. Promotions must be deserved and penalties fair. An open heart and mind will bring fulfilment. Use your creative talents . . ." which some might see as the usual vague Californian psychobabble, and not dissimilar from what one might read in any newspaper horoscope article; but which others will find genuinely helpful when using divination to get them to make up their minds. And, to be fair, it seemed to work for the famous American composer John Cage; so why not also for you?
