The Last Tragedian - Booth Tells His Own Story (rare Signed 1st Edition, Part Jacket Included)
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Edwin Thomas Booth (1833-1893) was an American actor (older brother of John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln). He toured the United States and the major capitals of Europe, performing Shakespearean plays, and 1869 founded Booth's Theatre in New York. Some theatrical historians consider him the greatest American actor, and the greatest Prince Hamlet, of the 19th century. His travels gave him many friends around the world, and he maintained affectionate correspondence with most of these. In his foreword, Otis Skinner says "My motive in presenting a small selection from the most characteristic of his letters is to allow Booth to tell his own story and speak for himself". The reader may of course judge whether this aim has been achieved. Otis Skinner (1858-1942) was an American stage actor active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Our book is in good condition for its age, bound in light brown cloth which is somewhat faded around the edges and spine, has a few surface marks, and is minimally torn at top & tail of the spine (front angle only). Title etc in gilt on front and spine - somewhat dulled on the front, and now only a dark image remains on the spine. Apart from these minor defects, the exterior is almost unworn. Inside, the binding is firm with no loose pages; all pages clean and bright; all illustrations present and correct; no foxing. Author's signature on halftitle page, with inscription 'To Virginia Gerson', probably the children's author (1864-1951). Included with the book are the front and spine of the original dust jacket, with clean-cut edges implying the use of scissors.
