The Lieutenant Must Be Mad - First Edition - Hellmut Kirst

This novel is by a German author, and has its setting in the garrison town of Rehhausen during the summer of 1944. The tide of war has turned against Hitler, and his offers' plot to destroy him is about to fail. The stage is therefore set when Lieutenant Strick, the unpolitical man, returns from three years' service on the Eastern front. On the front-line station he has seen wounded men awaiting transport while crates packed with "important military documents" are transported back to the garrison town. Strcik has his suspicions ; in Rehhausen he investigates and exposes their actual contents as loot. His actions causes the arrest of the local major and gives so much pleasure to the Gestapo that he finds himself appointed as National Socialist Guidance Officer for the garrison. From this vantage point he pry's open every piece of graft and dishonesty in a wretched system. Immensely readable, this book reflects the whole Fatherland at war in satirical miniature. Characterization is skilful, and the Germany presented is perhaps different in many ways from the previous impression of it in British minds.
