The Life And Adventures Of Oliver Twiss, The Workhouse Boy [dickens Parody]
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Dark brown boards, half bound in leather. Edges worn, 5cm slit at head of spine, 6cm at base. Corners bumped and worn. Binding cracked front and back, some pages torn, numerous pages age-stained though wholly readable, p.189 part missing, pp628-9 loose and reattached with sticky tape. This is a rare bound edition of a parody of Dicken's Oliver Twist, written and issued in 78 weekly parts at the same time as Dicken's work. The parody sold for a penny while the Dickens works sold for a shilling for each weekly part. This parody, and the 'Penny Picxwicx' parody of the Pickwick Papers published by the same team, were immensely successful, selling as much as 50,000 copies per issue. The low cover price is reflected in the cheap paper, crude woodcut illustrations, simplified language and heightened drama of the text. The whole gives an insight into the fierce interest in Dickens' work, even among less-educated readers. The copious anonymous illustrations are of interest for their rendition of scenes in prison and among servants and of a street market with itinerant traders, and for their closeness to theatre prints. The text is anonymous, but has been attributed to Thomas Peckett (or Preskett) Prest, creator of Sweeney Todd the demon barber and Varney the Vampire as well as pirate stories. A rare glimpse of 1830s publishing and cultural history.
