'The Little Colonists'or King Penguin Land, is one of two books of fiction for girls set in the Falkland Islands. Author Dorothy Henrietta Havers (1847 - 1923) wrote under the name of Theo Gift, thought by many to be a man. In 1854 Dorothy moved with her parents to the Falkland Islands, where her father was manager of the Falkland Islands Company. After the family returned to England, she began to write stories for magazines and published her first novel in 1874. During the 1890s she wrote The Little Colonists (1890) and An Island Princess (1893). These fictional works give a vivid picture of the isolated life of the colonists and careful descriptions of landscape and flora. The stories celebrate practical, confident and independent-minded young women and indeed a determination to speak up for working women is a feature of all her work. Beautifully illustrated with 8 monochrome etched plates (see images 2-4 for examples) and illustrated first letters at the start of each chapter. Published 1890. First edition. Good condition for its age. No highlighting or notes; some light ink marks on the ffep . Lightly tanned endpapers. Attractive pictorial embossed blue boards, with gilt crowm motif and lettering, show mild wear with rubbed corners and spine ends, and lightly faded spine. Internally, text and images remain clean and bright. A scarce collectable item.
