The Nasser D. Khalili Collection Of Islamic Art: Science, Tools & Magic
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
This two-part volume contains studies of many objects and manuscripts. They can be broadly categorised as scientific instruments, tools or magical implements. Many objects of this kind have never been systematically catalogued before, and these books bring together previously scattered information into a corpus of material for future comparative study. The Collection includes a celestial globe made in 1285-6 and a unique Judeo-Arabic astrolabe of c. 1300. There are also medical manuscripts, magic bowls, amulets and other magical or geomantic devices that reflect different aspects of medieval Islamic medical care. A group of mortars, locks, and miscellaneous tools such as scissors, scales and weights, are also included in this survey of objects which embody the varied preoccupations of Islamic culture. Books come in the original box, and are in very good condition except for a few white marks on the spines. The box also has a few white marks on it.
