The title of this book is: The New Encyclopaedia; or, Modern Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, On A New and Improved Plan. Volume and edition details: There are three volumes to this encyclopaedia and this is the third edition of volume two, covering contents G-Z. Condition: Overall, the condition of this volume is fair to good, although the cover is in poor condition. The following points should be noted: the book has full leather binding; although the front cover is present, it has become detached. The leather-covered boards are scratched and scuffed and the corners are bumped and frayed. The spine has raised bands and the leather is cracked and is peeling away - mainly to the top and bottom of the spine. This volume has marbled end papers and the front right-hand paper is worn at the spine edge. The internal saddle-stitched binding is sound. The condition of individual pages varies from stained, spotted and marked to clean and bright. For example, there is a dark stain to the edge of the first few pages, some pages are torn at the edges, and some creased, although the majority are largely intact. Interestingly, there are a small number of pencil illustrations to the back of some of the plates, presumably drawn by a former owner. The volume contains many beautiful plates covering a diverse range of subjects from natural history such as insects and whales, to crowns, coronets, and helmets. A significant proportion of the value of this volume lies in the plates. The book is over 15 inches tall (Elephant Folio). It was printed for: C. Cooke, No. 17 Pater-Noster Row. This book is a lovely, rare vintage find.
