The Nickel Boys is a 2019 novel based on the historic Dozier School, a reform school in Florida that operated for 111 years and was revealed as highly abusive. The book alternates between the 2010s and the 1960s and follows Elwood Curtis. In 1960s Florida, Elwood Curtis is a studious African-American high school student with an idealistic sense of justice inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights marches. He is selected to attend university classes due to his intelligence, but one innocent mistake sees Elwood convicted and sent to Nickel Academy, a juvenile reformatory. Elwood, trying to hold to his beliefs, befriends fellow student Turner, who has a more cynical view of the world and Nickel's administration. When Elwood's idealism and Turner's scepticism collide, the result has repercussions that last for decades. The book is in near-new condition, with only some very minor wear to the top edge of the dust jacket, which is otherwise in excellent condition. Internally the pages are clean and the binding strong.
