The Nigerian Civil War

The Nigerian civil war was not just another African tribal skirmish. It bears closer comparison with the American and Spanish civil wars. Like the American conflict, it was a war about nationhood and self- determination; like the Spanish civil war, it concerned outside intervention and the struggle between the great powers; and like both wars it was a desperate affair, fought to the bitter end by determined people who shared a common past and a common language. It was the first war in which African armies led by African officers fought each other with modern weapons. This highly readable book provides the first objective and informed account of the war. John de St. Jorre, who covered the conflict for the London Observer and visited both sides of the fighting line several times, writes from first-hand knowledge; he has had access to much material never published before. He offers new insights into the Nigerian and Biafran leaderships, the involvements of outsiders (Britain's key role received detailed analysis), and the military conduct of the war. He is critical of the worlds press and activities of some of the humanitarian organisations and his revelations account the foreign mercenaries are disturbing. Finally. John de St. Jorre sets the war in its wider context: its meaning for Africa and for Africans: the real significance of Biafra; and the lessons for world peace- keeping and humanitarian organisations. Condition - Good. Some creasing to the cover and spine, see pictures.
