In some volumes there is a previous owner's name on the first blank endpaper. This is not something that is found in every volume. There are no other internal markings or annotations. The text pages of these books are in very good condition indeed. The paper is bright, the font is well-defined and the texts are legible at all points. There are very few marks and blemishes to the pages and there is no evidence of foxing. The edges of the text blocks look to have tanned quite uniformly. The page edges do not appear marked, stained or grubby. The pages of the majority of volumes continue to sit together incredibly well, as if the books had not been read. There are a small number of volumes where the pages look not to have been cut properly. They have been separated without a huge amount of care and as a result you will see small torn sections of page protruding from the edge of the text block. The front and back hinges of almost all of the books are intact. There are a small number that have sustained some damage. The Portrait Of A Lady (Vol 1) has a crack to the front hinge that has caused the spine material to peel back exposing the backing material beneath (please see photograph). There are no loose pages however. The front hinge of The Aspern Papers is cracked and the webbing is exposed. Again, there are no loose pages and the front cover is still firmly attached. The bindings of these books feel tight, the covers are held firmly in place and there are no missing pages. The only loose pages are found at the end of The Wings Of The Dove (Vol 1). Pages 243-254 have come loose as one section. Their edges are a little curled. They have been left in situ. Externally, these books have navy blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration at the centre of their front covers and running the length of the spine. This gilding remains vibrant. There are scattered marks and stains on a small number of covers - the most noticeable being a red line down the front cover of The Ambassadors (Vol 2). There is some rubbing around the covers' edges but in only a few places are the boards ever exposed. This is typically at the corners. There are volumes where the material at the ends of the spines has frayed. There are three particularly damaged spines. The Golden Bowl (Vol 1) has a small flap of spine material part way down that is only attached at one end. There is no loss. The head end of Lord Beaupre has a far larger flap that is really quite delicate and at risk of becoming detached. The Aspern Papers has both flaps of spine material and also an area of quite obvious loss (please see all photographs). These are used books in very good condition. Seldom are so many found together. (PLEASE NOTE: Due to their weight and value, these books will be dispatched by courier.)
